PERSONAL INFORMATION

Yamato Kaiiki was a book written by an unknown author to most, but not unknown by Nuo. The author of this book, happened to be Nuo’s owner – her master. While it consists of many stories of the supernatural and/or paranormal, the Nekomata from this book is based on Nuo’s story. Nuo was born a stray, a normal cat born of fire yet not burned. The son of a samurai found her as a kitten and took her home to be raised by him and his mother, as his father was not to return. The three of them lived as a normal family, unknowing of what would eventually become of their father and husband. Through this stress, the boy wrote poems and stories while his mother learned the Shamisen, singing as the two waited and waited for their missing person. During this time, Nuo grew with them, being given a name, a home, and a duty. She, being a 三毛猫, a Tortoiseshell cat, was to beckon good luck and fortune to their family, and ward off evil spirits, wishing to bring the small surviving family harm. Little did they know that she herself would become this spirit of malice. Years passed with no sign of their beloved father and husband coming back. Nuo was growing old, along with her owner yet she still had a task to complete, though it would never come to be. As she grew older and older, the cat began to hide – she saw that something wrong was happening, but wouldn’t allow her master to shun her because of this. Odd happenings began haunting the Mother and the son as they searched for their pet. They were desperate, she was their key to reuniting the Miura family. While Nuo refused to let their home be cleansed, the poltergeist like occurrences only got worse, to the point where they were injured. The mother found a priest to try to cleanse their home, though the source of their problems was only found after a neighbor brought Nuo back to her family. The priest shot her with a holy arrow, through the chest. The shot was potentially fatal, but missed her heart narrowly. Now being an ethereal and supernatural creature, Nuo was able to survive. Her master returned her body to Mt Aso where she was found. She was laid there to rest while his mother stayed behind because she had taken too much damage from the hauntings to leave her home. Upon his return, he found their house was burning with his mother still inside. This brought him much trauma, losing his mother after never seeing his father again, and he decided not to pursue the life of a samurai, and instead write about his troubles as he had his entire life. Nuo had become something she never hoped to – realizing all the wrong she had done, she exiled herself from being with her master. He did not seek revenge on anyone, and spent his life coping with his losses through the art of writing and poetry. He was the author of Yamato Kaiiki, which is the name Nuo decided to inherit because of her wrong doings. She spent her next couple of centuries wandering the mountains and acquainting herself with other Yuurei and Mononoke around the world. She found that most portals to the supernatural realm were in places like Aokigahara and Hashima Island. With the more recent years, Nuo found it much easier to blend in with the outside, human world. She no longer had to wear long dresses and hats to cover her ears and tails. With the power of “cosplay,” she would walk around in public pretending to be a character from a tv show. It was fine if nobody had heard of it, she could just make it up and they would believe her. Thought she enjoyed interacting with and studying humans, she spent most of her time travelling through the supernatural realm, for months and months on end until she couldn’t find her way out. Through a thick forest, she thought she could see Chochin-Obake, another Yuurei, near a shrine, but she was wrong. As Nuo continued to approach the lights, she could feel it was getting harder and harder to see them, as well as move forward. She could hear them whispering about her, though she was only to ask them for guidance out of this thickening forest. When the lost kitten finally found that it wasn’t the Chocin Obake whispering, and that they weren’t there at all, it was too late. It had been too late since she had first wandered into this forest, and now she was trapped.

EXTRA: 

Ø In her early years as a Nekomata, Nuo did in fact eat humans or suck out their spirits. Sometimes she would snatch them from public, and be seen as a Kasha instead of a Nekomata. She was confused on her species for a long time because of this, but soon found a better diet.
